Check with your local courthouse about registering a business name and any licensing requirements. As long as you are the sole owner of the business and have no employees, you can use your SSN for a Federal Tax ID no. For state taxes, it depends on your state and the type of business. For example, if you will be required to collect sales tax, some states require a separate tax ID even if you don’t have employees.

My wife owns her own medical transcription business and works at home. As far as getting a business license, check with your local Court house or County Clerk’s office in the City where you plan to operate your business, which I assume is the same city in which you live. They can tell you were to go to get your business license. As far as taxes, if you have a tax person who normally does your taxes for you, you may want to contact them regarding taxes for your business. If not, you may want to consider hiring an accountant.
